From the moment you enter
through those modest doors facing Broadway,
you will feel the warmth generated
both by the gentle aura of the Church itself and
by the people who joyously worship within.
We are a passionately caring congregation who answers Christ’s call to serve those around us.
Built upon a slightly rising slope in the heart of Hazard, Kentucky, First Presbyterian Church was founded by missionary Dr. E. O Guerrant in 1892. For more than a century, the spirited and blessed congregations of First have survived snowstorms, floods, droughts, crushing poverty, the Great Depression. We have mourned the loss of our service men and women who have protected our freedom to worship each week and we have thanked God for the many blessings bestowed upon us. We have toiled in the streets, ministered in the homes, taught in our Sunday School rooms, sang psalms and hymns in our hearts and with our voices, and rejoiced in the company of friends and caregivers.
Presbyterian Christians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Some of the principles articulated by John Calvin remain at the core of Presbyterian beliefs. Among these are:
What they mean is that God is the supreme authority throughout the universe. Our knowledge of God and God's purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ. Our salvation (justification) through Jesus is God's generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments. It is everyone's job - ministers and lay people alike - to share this Good News with the whole world. That is also why the Presbyterian church is governed at all levels by a combination of clergy and laity, men and women alike. These leaders are called presbyters, or elders. Each member of the Presbyterian Church may become an elder, with each grouping of elders called a session. The various church sessions within a geographical area, ours is the Transylvania area, represent a Presbytery, with each Presbytery being a part of the Synod, and all the Synods belonging to a General Assembly.
